Shut It.

Instead of my usual snarky “shut it or I’ll shut it for ya” comment….I leaned in toward our most energetic kiddo this morning as I was making breakfast and just rubbed his shoulders to calm him. It was 8am and he was BEATING the kitchen counter like a set of drums. I whispered ‘shhhhh buddy…dad and Jacob are still asleep.”

And I heard in my spirit:  He will quiet you with His love.

It’s from Zephaniah 3:17 and I’m sure the original version wasn’t referring to how we should handle our hyper kiddos, but the Lord used it for me this morning. And for our son who is full of life no matter how early it might be.

In dealing with our son, He used it to show that drawing close to him and comforting him with love is a very powerful way to quiet him. It’s also a very peaceful & empowering way. And for a highly sensitive kiddo, it’s much more effective than demeaning him with a frustrated comment like “Do you EVER stop moving?” or “Will you EVER learn to be quiet?” No sir. No one needs to hear that. It’s discouraging and demeaning. Leaning in and softly telling him to quiet himself communicates that you believe he CAN and WILL hush…and demonstrates love in the process. Yeah. I’m learning to quiet him with love. Over and over until he gets it. He's worth it.

In dealing with me…I’ve learned time after time that if I will just sit still for a little bit and think on the things of God…He will quiet my soul with His love. He will show me His belief in me…the reasons He created me…the reasons He redeemed me…what He has called me to do and BE and say and write…and He will assure me that He is with me every moment. Because He absolutely loves me.  Meditating on that love is what quiets my soul. This happens to me in basketball games, fights with my husband (gasp), scary moments in big cities, traffic jams, and in my bed at night when I’m rehearsing in my head the ways I’ve failed each day. He says “I love you. I’ve redeemed you. I’m near to you. Shhhh….child. Rest. I’ve got this. I've got you.”

He does NOT say "Shut it." He says "Tell me all about it. Confess and communicate and converse with me. CHILL and chat."

So I'm asking Him to quiet me with His love today.  He has already made the way. We just need to learn to walk in it. Get quiet. Get still. Stop beating the kitchen counters mercilessly. He’s so close we can feel Him if we let ourselves. He’s rubbing our shoulders, daughters of the King...because in His eyes, we are wrapped up in the perfection of Jesus Christ. When we think on these things, the comfort of His love will rush over our souls and stir up a peace that passes understanding. Lean in to Him. ENJOY HIM. And be confident that when we are in Christ, He is enjoying us too. What a beautiful dance it is. Choreographed by the King of Kings.
