There’s hustle and bustle around here worse than Black Friday thanks to the back-to-school rush and the return of football. I’m so glad I got my heart right with God this morning at church before I went to Sams for groceries. Me and the rest of the city. And surrounding areas.
As I’ve been running around getting all the “must haves” for our 3 boys to walk in to school somewhat prepared tomorrow…my soul has been stirring. I see so many weary mamas and daddies rushing from one thing to another and handing out cash here and there and making sure ALL NEEDS are met for their children. They have such great hearts and desires for their kids to succeed.
But I wonder if we have forgotten a few things. Maybe just one big thing. A great need.
I wonder what the first day of school would be like if we were concerned about a different kind of school supply list.
You know when they leave their lunch at home and GOD FORBID they have to eat that dreadful school lunch so we take off work or miss a conference call or have to get our clothes and makeup on just to deliver that lunch to them??
What if our kiddos didn’t leave the house without a prayer? What if prayer was more of a priority to us than their lunch or their science binder or their branded shoes and clothing? What if prayer was at the TOP of the school supply list, mamas?
My dad has the sweetest tradition. He calls it a “huddle prayer.” Every time we leave to go home after visiting him and my mom, he gathers us into a huddle and prays over us before we drive away.
It makes me feel so loved and SO PROTECTED.
Isn’t that how you want your children to feel as they trek off to school?
The huddle prayer works well in my house full of little men. They love huddles. Mostly on the football field but whatever. The intimacy of prayer can be a little scary so calling it a “huddle” helps.
Does prayer scare you, mama?
I know it can be intimidating.
It’s much easier to sacrifice time at Target buying 6 pages of school supplies for your kiddos. Or sacrifice money buying the latest school t-shirts and bumper stickers from the PTA. Or sacrifice your sanity by showing up for open house/meet the teacher.
Let us make it a priority this school year to offer a sacrifice of prayer.
I want to invite you to get uncomfortable and vulnerable with your little students every day by leading them in a prayer as the last “school supply” you equip them with on their way out the door. A plea to the great Supplier of all needs.
Huddle up your children each morning and hold their little souls up to Jesus. Align your hearts together in trusting Him with your day. Confess that you believe He is enough to carry your kids through the day. Tell him how grateful you are to have children. Tell Him how much you love the gifts He has given each one of them…and praise Him for the way you see their gifts being used every day. Thank Him that you get to watch them grow up. Pray about the battlefield you’re sending your little warriors into. Proclaim that you trust the Lord loves your children more than you ever could and that He is with them. Ask Him to make Himself known to your children. Ask him to calm their fears…to whisper peace to their hearts…to remind them of things during the day that they’ve learned in church or from the Word of God. Ask Him to help them understand how much He loves them. Ask Him to remind them that they are not alone. Pray that they would feel His presence. Pray with boldness and confidence in your great God to answer you. He loves your heart for your children. He gets it.
THIS IS POWER, mama.
Cry if you want. Praise Him in the huddle. Hug them so tight. Then send them off knowing they’re in good Hands.
This is as much for our mama hearts as it is for theirs. This is walking with Jesus.
